Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Animal Care Technician position. The Animal Care Technician is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $22.54 - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Maintenance of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and animal care facilities including supplies, equipment, and records for use in research and teaching as required by federal regulations governing care and use of laboratory animals. In addition to the primary responsibilities of animal care and cleaning, the technician may also contribute in the following ways: animal husbandry, euthanasia, and the extraction of biological tissues, training a diverse group of students in animal care, and assisting with database management. The position is considered essential and requires weekend, holiday, and off-hour coverage.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintenance and monitoring of vertebrates and invertebrates including aquatic and terrestrial animals and animal rooms for use in research and teaching.
  • Regular feeding and watering of all vertebrate and invertebrate animals and maintenance of all animal colonies as required by federal and state regulations.
  • Cleaning of cages, tanks, and animal housing as well as keeping sinks and floors, walls, bench tops, ventilation ducts, storage areas, and fixtures clean and free of dust and dirt in all animal rooms.
  • Establish breeding pairs of animals as requested and transferring young as appropriate; maintain records of births and deaths; management of stocks and statistics using database tracking software.
  • Oversee mouse colony maintenance and genotyping and perform health assessments on experimental animals. May include but not limited to: mouse handling, weaning, ear punch for id/genotyping, tail snip for genotyping, tattoo ID, assisting with minor procedures/surgeries, monitoring mice after treatments, administering special diets/water, euthanasia, and tissue collection.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of a zebrafish and sea anemone facilities including transgenic and wild type lines (e.g., sex sorting and genotyping transgenic animals).
  • Maintain and regularly update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the care of animals and the operation of relevant equipment (e.g., cage washer and fish system pump room)
  • Receive and label shipped animals and place them in appropriately labeled housing, keeping records of incoming and outgoing animals.
  • Order food, bedding, aquarium supplies and cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Train and supervise a diverse group of students and staff hired to handle animal room chores while employee is on vacation or other leave
  • Train students and staff in proper animal handling techniques.
  • Maintain mechanical equipment for animal housing (e.g., tank equipment, sea water mixing systems, fish filtration systems)
  • Monitor and report on animal room conditions (lighting, temperature, humidity) for rodents, invertebrates, and aquatic animals.
  • Monitor and maintain animal room records (census, sanitation, enrichment, feeding, and animal identification)
  • Monitor and report on health and provide aid to animals that are injured or ill.
  • Restrain and euthanize animals, when necessary, as approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.


  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working with live animals in a laboratory setting
  • Experience with basic email, word processing and database management software
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to contributing to an intentionally inclusive community

  • 3-5 years of experience working with animals and advanced specialized training, including AALAS LAT or ALAT certification
