Job Summary
The F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Kentucky (http://www.engr.uky.edu/bme) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and values-driven leader to serve as its next chair. The chair will have leadership responsibilities for all BME academic and research programs, including:
  • 10 core BME faculty with expectations for continued faculty growth, 3 core staff, and a strong collaborative network of joint and adjunct faculty spanning multiple discipline
  • Established MS/PhD programs supporting a research enterprise with over $2.5M in annual expenditure
  • Recently launched BS BME program that emphasizes medical product design, with ABET accreditation in process and enrollment already exceeding 160 students in its first three years
As holder of the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Endowed Chair in Biomedical Engineering, the chair will control significant financial resources to support these responsibilities.

The successful candidate will have established leadership skills and experience to help articulate and drive forward a strategic vision for the department. Minimum qualifications include:
  • PhD in BME or a closely related field with accomplishments and reputation consistent with expectations for a 9-month faculty appointment at the rank of tenured Full Professor in the Regular Title Series
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in a current or previous leadership/administrative role, and an understanding of governance and decision-making in academic environments
  • Evidence of success and strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate education, including familiarity with the ABET accreditation process

The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering, is a member of the College of Engineering Executive Committee, and represents the department to intra- and extramural stakeholders. The F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering is a core part of the UK College of Engineering’s strategic plan, The College of Engineering’s 13 degree programs and 10 academic units are supported by 160 full-time faculty and 135 staff members. Enrollment at the college, nearly 4,000 at present, has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade, with research awards exceeding $50 million in 2022. Our diverse student population allows for a rich and broad educational experience. The college also contains an extended campus in Paducah, and multiple research institutes and centers that promote multidisciplinary research across the various colleges in the university, including strong connections between engineering and medicine. The next chair will have the opportunity to expand multidisciplinary connections across campus and grow the BME programs and research portfolio to address pressing needs in human health.
