Assistant Professor, Journalism and Media Studies

Department of Mass Communication

The College of Fine Arts and Communication invites applications for a tenure-track, 10-month Assistant Professor position in Journalism and Media Studies, and a master’s program in Communication Management in the Department of Mass Communication beginning January 2022.



Earned PhD in journalism or mass communication. Demonstrated success as a classroom teacher with full responsibility for teaching two or more classes in the area of media analysis and literacy, audio production, multimedia storytelling techniques, or qualitative research method. A demonstrated success in research productivity with published articles in peer-reviewed journals in the field. Professional journalism experience in audio production is preferred. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.



Faculty assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units per academic year for the first year. Beginning the second year, the workload reverts back to the standard instructional workload of seven to eight (7-8) course units per academic year. Undergraduate teaching responsibilities will include such courses as Introduction to Mass Communication, Mass Media & Society, Broadcast Journalism, Magazine Publishing, and Multimedia Reporting Capstone. The primary graduate teaching responsibility is Qualitative Research Methods. Other teaching opportunities might exist in the areas of the candidate’s scholarship and expertise. Undergraduate advising is part of teaching responsibilities. Supervising graduate theses and graduate projects is expected. Scholarly research productivity, programmatic assessment activity, and service to the department, college and university are expected.

The department (https://www.towson.edu/cofac/departments/mass-communication/) offers undergraduate majors in Mass Communication with tracks in journalism; strategic public relations and integrated communication; and advertising. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science in Communication Management. The department annually enrolls over 700 majors served by 20 full-time and over 20 part-time faculties.
