SmithBucklin is seeking an Executive Director to be located in our Washington, D.C office to serve our client organization the Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA).

VRMA is a dynamic and fast-paced organization operating in an industry experiencing explosive global growth and transformation. We are seeking a chief staff executive capable of providing both the strategic thinking and centralized and accountable operational leadership required to navigate a strong post-pandemic rebound in 2021 while setting the course for VRMA to regain the strong momentum and international reach the organization had going into 2020.

VRMA has experienced significant growth over the past four years in a dynamic and fast-changing marketplace, driven by passionate board members, volunteer leaders, members and industry partners. Partnering with the VRMA Board of Directors, the Executive Director has overall responsibility for strategic leadership, event, program and services planning and execution, certification, member services and operations, industry advocacy and relations, and the financial and general business management functions of the organization and is accountable for overall success in achieving mission of VRMA. The individual selected for this role will engage the appropriate resources to support VRMAs portfolio of products and services, and direct the work of a matrix team of experienced and talented functional specialists.

The VRMA Executive Director is directly accountable to the Board of Directors for achievement of outcomes, mission impact, volunteer strength and service delivery. The Executive Director will work interdependently to execute their responsibilities within the framework of SmithBucklin client stewardship principles and operating guidelines.

Internally, the Executive director is part of a large community of peer association executives and reports to the Vice President, Business + Trade Industry Practice at SmithBucklin. Success is measured by achievement of client-defined results and client-evaluated satisfaction measures, consistently demonstrating required executive competencies, and adherence to SmithBucklin Chosen Values.

SmithBucklin is a client centric organization and this position is embedded within VRMAs own culture, values and behaviors. Client organization work environments vary but are all dynamic and volunteer driven. SmithBucklins work style is collaborative, with teams organized both hierarchically and matrixed. Work activity for this role is self-managed. High pressure situations characterized by both changing expectations and multiple priorities are frequently encountered. Frequent travel and some international travel is required.


  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in leadership and/or management roles
  • Experience as an Executive Director, COO, Chief of Staff or the top P&L leader of an organization
  • Capable of shaping vision and implementing an ambitious strategic plan and complex portfolio of products and services
  • Has global experience and embraces a global perspective on the trends, challenges and opportunities in delivery of programs worldwide.
  • A business minded person, with profit and loss and budgetary experience
  • Demonstrated passion for the mission of his/her organization, his/her professional community and cultivating a continuous learning culture
  • Knowledge and a measurable track record of expanding an organizations core assets and elevating the profile of an organization through outreach, marketing and public relations
  • Is recognized as a collaborator and someone who effectively builds and enhances relationships.
  • Relationship building skills to cultivate and maintain engagement with member organizations and volunteers
  • An inspirational leader, with a history of leading a staff and managing their professional growth and development
  • Effective presentation and public speaking skills are required
  • Proficiency with basic computer programming, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred

  • Identify and build a valuable portfolio of services and resources that will attract an expanded set of membership segments that reflects the breadth of our global community
  • Unify the short-term rental community under one umbrella organization, while allowing for individual brand identities, and become the single, trusted global voice of the industry
  • Provide high value, targeted educational content through a variety of platforms to drive member growth and increase engagement
  • Advocate for professionalism by educating members, influencing public policymakers, and collaborating with other organizations that share the same goals

Executive Director Role and Responsibilities

PLANNING AND EXECUTION. Advise, guide and support the VRMA Board of Directors in executing their long term strategy and annual goals; and allocating resources including capital and people. Provide expertise, develop, present and recommend operational plans & programs to the board and committees that deliver the desired outcomes. Includes allocating resources, setting budgets, determining operational plan, program activities, and establishing revenue and expense targets for annual budgeting.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. Plan, direct, monitor, and analyze association finances in order to achieve their financial objectives. Financial planning and decision-making to ensure funding is available and that VRMA assets are utilized efficiently and responsibly. Works with the Board of Directors and Treasurer to develop annual operating budget, analyze, interpret and forecast financials. Coordinate SmithBucklin resources and facilitate use of outside investment managers on behalf of the client. Recommend and ensure compliance to policies and ensure financial control processes are in place.

GOVERNANCE. Provide governance support and leadership expertise to the Board of Directors and committees. Provide onboarding, guide and mentor Directors in their volunteer role. Develop and comply with association policies & bylaws. Actively engage in succession planning process, recruit and recommend potential volunteer leaders. Establish board and committee agendas. Ensure that an effective, high performance, governance model is in place.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT. Provide administrative oversight of ongoing association operations. Monitor, evaluate and optimize performance of association programs against goals. Allocate SmithBucklin staff and internal/external resources to meet association objectives. Act as the main liaison between the association leadership and staff, lead association committees or ensure that leadership is in place, coordinate and advise volunteers, report to and communicate with the Board of Directors to obtain direction, establish objectives and implement strategies.

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT. Manage relationships with board members and volunteers. Facilitate the establishment of positive relationships between SmithBucklin staff and VRMA constituents. Apply SmithBucklin client stewardship principles and ensure alignment and collaboration among volunteer leaders.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT. Manage and motivate a matrix staff team of approximately 25; assign and supervise work, evaluate performance, and develop individuals. Lead & direct the efforts of cross-functional teams of indirect reporting SmithBucklin service unit professionals as needed to meet client goals. Coordinate, motivate and influence association volunteers to work towards client organizational goals and priorities.

MANAGE ASSOCIATION GROWTH. Oversee development, implementation, marketing and evaluation of programs and services designed to grow the association, create member value, advance association priorities, and grow non-dues revenue.

OVERSEE EXTERNAL MESSAGING & BRAND MANAGEMENT. Oversee the development of the association's internal and external messaging on industry issues and trends, and communicate with volunteers and staff regarding the association and the work of VRMA members. Ensure all actions, activities and output for association is consistent with the brand promise and value proposition.

PARTNER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT. Identify, contract and manage partners required to execute on the boards strategic directives. Recommend and review service provider selection as required to meet client organization-specific needs. Manage service provider contract administration including setting performance metrics for desired outcomes.
