Upon resumption of normal operations, this role may be performed at our Arlington Heights, Illinois office.

Infrastructure Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) are responsible for engineering software solutions to infrastructure problems. The ultimate purpose of the role is to improve service quality by preventing service impacting incidents and reducing mean-time-to recover (MTTR) when incidents do arise.

This purpose is achieved in a few key ways:

  • Collaborating closely with software and infrastructure teams to improve end-to-end monitoring and alerting for our production services.
  • They deliver lasting, preventative improvements that cross the development/operation team divides.
  • They coordinate our response to service impacting incidents

Responsible for:

  • Routinely modifying configurations or systems in a way that produces lasting improvements from a one-time effort.
  • Applying their expertise and experience to assist with architecting the next generation of services
  • Assisting with support escalation in high impacting incidents, coordinating SMEs and vendors as required
  • Representing ITID “outwards” to manage quality of service delivered.

Major Challenges

  • The most significant challenges to the role holder are:
  • Working across the development & operations divide in the organisation, using influencing skills to bring teams together for a common cause
  • Implementing change into technology that has stayed mostly the same for many years, persuading teams to adopt novel approaches to old problems
  • Dealing with high-pressure, incident firefighting scenarios

ESSENTIAL CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong understanding of infrastructure technologies and their deployment in a global IT enterprise
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with users of various technical skill levels, remaining calm and courteous while working to resolve problems.
  • Ability to adapt and understand new technologies.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Methodical approach to problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Proficient documentation skills; able to fully document operational requirements, proposed solutions, processes and data flows effectively
  • Effective time management skills; with the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously requiring experience with prioritizing tasks due to shifting priorities, fluctuating workloads, and deadline pressures. 
  • Ability to work in a multi country, culturally diverse and time-zone separated role.

IDEAL CANDIDATE REQURIEMENTS

  • Typically educated to undergraduate degree level.
  • Preferably has a technical background within infrastructure
  • Preferably has scripting/automation skills
