Overview

Our Mission

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two sites, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.

The Opportunity

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks two qualified Senior Exhibition Coordinators to manage the planning and delivery of exhibitions, installations, and special projects. Reporting to the Associate Director for Exhibitions, the successful candidates coordinate the planning, management and execution of complex exhibitions and related efforts. Works on special projects, such as permanent collection re-installations and other public facing projects, as required.



Responsibilities

  • Manages the planning and execution of complex exhibitions and related efforts.
  • Oversees the project coordination of major permanent collection gallery renovations and works on and reviews special projects, as required by the Associate Director for Exhibitions.
  • Assembles, manages, and monitors detailed budgets for exhibitions and other special initiatives. Includes fiscal development, investigating and reporting, and the implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains shared costs budgets and prepares final reconciliations with outside partners.
  • Manages the production and dissemination of project information and the organization of resources. Includes schedules, tasks, funds, materials, and people, working collaboratively across multiple departments.
  • Develops exhibition agreements with national and international museums, cultural partners, lenders, and guest curators.
  • Coordinates the work of exhibition contributors and stakeholders. For example, registrars; preparators; designers; educators; interpreters; curators; public affairs; and events staff; among others.
  • Assigns and monitors tasks, enforces deadlines, and oversees installation progress, anticipates, and troubleshoots issues, facilitates team collaboration.
  • Communicates exhibition progress through dissemination. Includes initiating and spearheading a variety of exhibition planning and development meetings.
  • Conducts exhibition-related administrative tasks: compiles and analyzes statistics, creates and processes payments for vendors, exhibition lenders and others, schedules travel.
  • Monitors the work of outside consultants and vendors.
  • May prepare, maintain, and monitor consolidated department budgets and provide budget variance analysis. Includes guidance to sub- departments in budget tracking and analysis.



Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in art history, museum studies or related field, masters preferred
  • 5-7 years exhibition coordination, project management experience or complex budget management
