HSBC has been at the forefront of advising clients on sustainable finance with a leadership position in green, social and sustainability bond underwriting. In support of this strategic initiative, we are hiring for a Vice President within Debt Capital Markets to focus on Sustainable Bonds for the Americas. In terms of remit, the role will be charged with supporting the origination effort across HSBC’s diverse client base including non-financial corporates, financial institutions, financial sponsors and public sector issuers.

The candidate will structure use of proceeds and sustainability linked formats, guide issuers through the development of sustainable financing frameworks and second-party opinions, advise on investor marketing and provide holistic views on sustainable finance.

With HSBC’s global platform, the role requires a collaborative mind-set to partner regionally and globally with Banking and Product colleagues.  The role involves pitching clients, product development and transaction execution.

 

Key Responsibilities, include, but are not limited to:

  • Drive the origination, structuring and execution of sustainable bonds across the Americas
  • Deal team leader on sustainable bond transactions with responsibility for developing an issuer’s green or sustainable financing framework, engaging second-party opinion providers, shaping disclosure and marketing materials in support of debt capital markets transactions
  • Provide advice on incorporating an issuer’s sustainability strategy into their capital structure
  • Maintain relationships with ESG ratings providers, industry groups, credit agencies and other relevant organizations
  • Partner with ESG Solutions on new product development and sustainable financing considerations
  • Prepare client marketing materials including, presentations and client briefing notes
  • Mentor junior resources on ESG trends, meeting materials and career development
  • Adhere to global standards for behavior, communication, coordination, performance
  • Synthesize market observations and developments to identify relevant themes for clients, staying abreast of relevant emerging themes in and regulation related to sustainability and the impact on corporate strategy, sustainable finance and ratings

Management of Risk

  • Each employee must be aware of the Operational Risk scenario associated with the role and acts in a manner that takes account of operational risk considerations.
  • Each employee must ensure compliance, operational risk controls in accordance with HSBC or regulatory standards and policies; and optimize relations with regulators by addressing any issues.
  • Each employee must promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand.

Observation of Internal Controls

  • Each employee must maintain HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators. Any failures to comply with the above should be reflected in year-end performance assessments.
  • Each employee must understand, follow and demonstrate compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 6-9 years of experience within debt capital markets, banking, ESG ratings, sustainable or responsible investment, including extensive front-office experience
  • Demonstrable deep understanding of ESG investing and sustainable finance concepts and knowledge of market, investor and regulatory developments in sustainable finance
  • Solid understanding of climate-related risks and reporting frameworks, including the recommendations of the TCFD, SASB and GRI, etc.
  • Knowledge of ESG ratings and ESG impact on credit ratings
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Extensive experience with PowerPoint & Excel
  • Strong quantitative/analytical skills
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Team player and effective collaborator with demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to multi-task and to work well under pressure, with strong initiative, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Language skills (Spanish) a benefit
